Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for chronic wounds.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy continues to be discussed as another adjunctive therapy in the continuum of wound care. There is a dearth of evidence from randomized clinical trials on HBO therapy. For evidence-based practice, more randomized, controlled studies need to be conducted with HBO therapy to determine its efficacy in treating other chronic wounds besides those of patients with diabetes.

“O ne must always hope when one is desperate, and doubt when one hopes.” Gustave Flaubert. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been promoted as an effective treatment for diabetic foot wounds, and the first controlled trial for this indication was reported (in Diabetes Care) over 20 years ago (1). Advocates have suggested that the experimentally demonstrated effects of HBOT on improving wound ...
متن کاملAntioxidant Response of Chronic Wounds to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
We analyzed the effects of the clinical hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on the plasma antioxidant response and levels of endothelin-1, Interleukine-6 (IL-6) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in patients with chronic wounds (20.2±10.0 months without healing). They received 20 HBOT sessions (five sessions/week), and blood samples were obtained at sessions 1, 5 and 20 before and 2 hou...
متن کاملHyperbaric oxygen therapy heals diabetic wounds
With the increasing prevalence of diabetes in the community, morbidity and mortality as a result of diabetic feet has been increasing. Foot complications are one of the most serious and yet preventable complications of diabetes mellitus having an economic impact to the individual and adding the burden to the already inadequate healthcare resources. Complications associated with diabetes are oft...
متن کامل[Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for chronic diabetic wounds of the lower limbs--a review of the literature].
Chronic wounds of the lower limbs are a cause of severe morbidity in diabetic patients. Low oxygen tension around the wound is one of several critical factors, which mutually enhance the progression of a chronic ulcer. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) is believed to improve wound healing by enhancing oxygen tension around the wound. While conventional therapies for diabetic foot ulcer are based ...
